Book Your ECS Test Online in the UK: Complete Application Guide

Booking your ECS test is straightforward once you know your options. This guide covers where you can take the test, what you need to bring or prepare, and what happens after you finish.

Which ECS test do you need?

For most card routes the key assessment is the Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) assessment: 50 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, with a pass mark of 43. Some cards and roles may also require other assessments, such as the Electrical Safety Unit assessment or role-specific tests, so check the requirements for your card first. Our “Which test do I need?” page can help, and you can browse the full list on our all ECS tests page.

Where can you take the test?

Remote invigilation

Many candidates sit the assessment online with a remote invigilator watching via webcam. It is convenient because you can take it from home or work, but you need a suitable set-up: a computer with a working webcam and microphone, a stable internet connection and a quiet, private room.

Approved test centres

If you prefer to sit the assessment in person, you can use an approved test centre. See our test centre finder or go straight to a major location:

After the test

If you pass, keep your result safe. A pass can be used for an ECS card application or renewal for two years, so apply within that window. Next, follow our ECS card application guide to complete your card application.

What if you do not pass?

You can take the assessment again; a new fee applies for each attempt, so it is worth revising properly before rebooking. Review the topics you found hardest, work through practice questions and consider our revision courses.
