ECS Card Apply Online UK: Complete Guide for Electricians (2026)

For electricians, the right ECS card depends on where you are in your career. This guide explains the main cards, how electricians usually progress from one to the next and how to apply online without picking the wrong one.

Why the right card matters

An ECS card is more than a site pass. It tells a contractor your job grade, which affects what work you can be given and, in many cases, how you are paid. Applying for a card that does not match your qualifications wastes time and fees, so it pays to get it right first time.

The ECS card route for electricians

Most electricians move through these stages. Open each card page for the exact requirements, as these are set by the scheme and can change.

How to choose the right card

Match the card to the evidence you hold today

Base your choice on the qualifications you can prove right now, not the ones you are about to finish. If you are a few weeks from completing your end-point assessment, apply for your current stage first and upgrade when you have the result.

Do not aim for a grade you cannot evidence

Higher grades ask for more. If you apply too high, the application is likely to be rejected or you may be offered a lower card, which costs you time.

Unsure? Check before you pay

Our test and card finder and our FAQ page cover the most common questions.

Evidence you will need

The HS&E assessment is 50 questions in 30 minutes, with a pass mark of 43. A pass remains usable for card applications for two years. Practise with our free practice questions.

Progressing and renewing

Treat your ECS card as a career document. Whenever you gain a new qualification, check whether it opens the door to a higher grade. Diarise your expiry date at least a few months ahead, because renewal usually needs an in-date HS&E pass and you do not want a gap in your site access. Lost your card? Use our replacement service.
