How to Apply for an ECS Card Online in the UK (2026 Guide)

Important update: we have moved to a new domain

Applyecscard.co.uk is now moved to our new domain, CSCSscheme.com. It is the same independent booking service with the same ECS card and test pages – only the web address has changed. If you arrived from an old link, please update your bookmarks to cscsscheme.com.

Our email addresses have moved too and now end in @cscsscheme.com (for example info@cscsscheme.com). Existing customers do not need to do anything.

If you work in the UK electrotechnical industry, an ECS card is the everyday proof of who you are, what you are qualified to do and that your health and safety knowledge is up to date. This guide walks you through the whole online application process, step by step.

What is an ECS card?

ECS stands for the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme. An ECS card shows employers, site managers and clients that you hold the qualifications for your job role and that you have passed a health, safety and environmental assessment. ECS is a CSCS partner card scheme, which is why ECS cards are widely accepted on UK construction sites.

There are different cards for different roles and career stages, from trainee and apprentice cards through to Gold cards, Black (manager) cards and White cards. You can see them all on our ECS cards page.

Who needs an ECS card?

Anyone working in electrotechnical roles on sites where proof of competence is required: electricians, electrical labourers, apprentices, technicians, supervisors and managers. Many principal contractors will not let you on site without a valid card, so it is worth sorting out before you start a new job rather than after.

How to apply for an ECS card: 6 steps

  1. Pick the right card. Match the card to your job role and qualifications, not to the job you hope to do next. Not sure? Use our “Which test do I need?” guide.
  2. Check your evidence. Each card has its own requirements, usually a recognised qualification or proof that you are registered on a training programme. The page for your card lists what is needed.
  3. Complete the health, safety and environmental (HS&E) assessment. For most card routes you need a current pass. See our HS&E assessment page and the quick facts below.
  4. Book your test. You can book your ECS test online and choose between remote invigilation or an approved test centre.
  5. Submit your card application. Complete the application with accurate personal details, your photo and your supporting documents.
  6. Receive and keep your card safe. Note the expiry date and diarise your renewal. If you lose a card, use our renewal and replacement service.

Documents and information to have ready

Tip: scan or photograph documents before you start so you are not hunting for paperwork half-way through an online form.

The HS&E assessment: the step people forget

Most applicants lose time here. The ECS Health, Safety and Environmental assessment is a closed-book, multiple-choice test, and the format is fixed:

Time allowed30 minutes
Pass mark43 out of 50 correct
Validity of a pass2 years – you must apply for or renew your card within that time

Want to practise first? Read our HS&E practice questions guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to apply for an ECS card online?

The online forms themselves take around 15 to 20 minutes if your documents are ready. Overall timing depends on your card type, whether you still need to take the HS&E assessment, and how quickly your evidence can be verified.

Can I apply if I have not taken the HS&E assessment yet?

Usually you will need a current pass first, so book the test early. You can book the HS&E test only if that is all you need.

Can my employer book for several people?

Yes. Employers can use our group booking service.

I need help choosing a card. Who can I ask?
